7 Signs That Your Child May Be Being Bullied at School
(and What You Can Do About It)
Bullying remains a distressingly prevalent reality in U.S. middle
and highschools.
The National Youth Violence Prevention Network reports that about 30
percent of students (more than 5.7 million young people) are
involved in bullying -- either bullying other students, being
bullied themselves, or both.
1. Sudden change in attitude
toward school.
2.
Unexplained cuts, bruises or
other injuries.
3.
Significant drop in grades.
4. Persistent requests to stay
home because of hard-to-prove illnesses such as stomach aches or
headaches.
5.
Changes in eating habits or
sleep patterns.
6.
Changes in social patterns,
activities and friends.
7. Mood swings, angry
outbursts or other emotional changes.
What You Can Do
The behaviors and
experiences listed above are not definitive proof that your child is
being bullied. But they should prompt you to take a closer look at
what's going on with your child -- especially if you observe many or
all of these signs.
Adolescents and teens who act in the ways described above may be
doing so for a number of reasons. They may not like their teacher,
they might be struggling with a particular subject or they may have
simply forgotten to study for a test and are looking for an excuse
to stay home. On the more serious side, though, they may be
experimenting with alcohol or other drugs, may be suffering from
anxiety or depression, or may be being bullied or otherwise abused.
The experts can educate you about many of these conditions -- but
don't forget that when it comes to your child, you are the expert.
When you notice out-of-character behaviors, dramatic (and
unexplainable) changes or any other events that set off your
parental radar, don't dismiss your concerns without further
investigation.
Talk to your child, consult with school personnel and, if necessary,
make an appointment with your family physician. If bullying is the
problem, you need to get involved to end the abuse before any more
damage is done.

Beginning
in spring 2012, the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness
(STAAR™) will replace the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills
(TAKS). The STAAR program at grades 3-8 will assess the same
subjects and grades that are currently assessed on TAKS. At high
school, however, grade-specific assessments will be replaced with 12
end-of-course (EOC) assessments: Algebra I, geometry, Algebra II,
biology, chemistry, physics, English I, English II, English III,
world geography, world history, and U.S. history.
The resources on this website provide information and sample test
questions to familiarize Texas educators and the public with the
design and format of the STAAR assessments. The information is
intended to help educators understand how the new STAAR program
measures the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) curriculum
standards. These resources are intended to support, not narrow or
replace, the teaching of the TEKS curriculum.
Tiles for Technology
Technology Fundraiser
Landolt PTA is offering a colorful and creative way to not only
raise funds for much needed classroom technology but also to
beautify our campus for years to come. Landolt students, families,
best friends, classes, and teacher teams can help beautify our
school by decorating a 6" tile which will be installed on the
columns at front entrance of the school.
Each
tile will cost $50. This price includes the tile, paint, glazing,
firing and installation of the tile at Landolt. Landolt PTA will
earn $35 per tile which will be used to purchase classroom
technology equipment. The
money raised by this fundraiser pays for technology such as Lumens
Document cameras and Smart Boards for the class rooms. The Lumens
and smart boards allow teachers and student to have a more
interactive and educational classroom experience.
